Market Fit Sheet: will your product fit the market you are launching in?

A product that sells in one market can stall in the next. Four things decide the fit: the price ceiling, power and climate, the certificates, and the sales channel. Check each one for the US and Europe before the board is drawn, and see the certificate table by device type.

The 8 questions

Four things decide the fit

Answer each question for every market you plan to sell in. The PDF adds what a good fit looks like and the red flag for each, a US and Europe fit grid, and the certificate table.

A

Price ceiling

2 items
  1. 01
What do similar products sell for in this market? The shelf sets the price you can charge, not your costs.
  2. 02
Does your landed cost leave a margin at that price?Freight, duty, fees and returns all come out of the shelf price.
B

Power and climate

2 items
  1. 03
Which plug and voltage will it use?Mains power differs by market: the US uses 120 V, Europe 230 V.
  2. 04
Where will it really be used: heat, cold, damp?Batteries and seals behave differently in a hot car or a cold garage.
C

Certificates

2 items
  1. 05
Which marks does each market require? Each market has its own tests and marks, and they shape the design.
  2. 06
Does it use a pre-certified radio module?A pre-certified module is the cheaper, faster route to radio certification.
D

Channel

2 items
  1. 07
Where will it sell: Amazon, retail, or direct? Each channel has its own price, fees and paperwork.
  2. 08
What does that channel ask for before it lists you?Marketplaces and retailers can ask for test reports, labels and battery documents.

FAQ

Questions about launching in a new market

How do I know if my product fits a market?

Check four things for that market: the price ceiling, power and climate, the certificates it needs, and the sales channel. A product can fit one market and stall in the next.

Which certifications do I need for the US and Europe?

Most electronics need FCC Part 15B in the US and CE marking in Europe. A radio adds FCC radio authorization and the Radio Equipment Directive, and lithium batteries need UN 38.3 to ship. The certificate table shows them by device type.

Does a pre-certified radio module make certification cheaper?

Usually. Our published range for FCC radio authorization is $3,000 to $10,000 with a pre-certified module, against $8,000 to $20,000 for a custom radio. The finished product is still tested.

Is it really free?

Yes. Everything is on this page with no email needed. You only enter an email if you want the PDF copy.
