FAQ

Questions about hardware development costs

How much does it cost to build a hardware product?

It depends on the product. A simple product typically costs $20,000 to $60,000 to develop, a typical connected product $75,000 to $300,000, and complex or regulated products commonly above $500,000. Answer eight questions to see a range for your product, stage by stage.

How long does hardware product development take?

Typically 12 to 18 months for a simple electronic product, 18 to 30 months for a connected or battery-powered one, and two years or more if it is regulated. Much of the calendar is waiting: tooling, lab bookings and component lead times.

How accurate is the estimate?

It uses the ranges we publish in our cost and timeline guides, not a quote. Where we publish no figure, such as app and cloud work, it says quoted separately instead of guessing.

Is the estimator free?

Yes. You see your ranges and timeline without giving an email. You only enter an email if you want the PDF report.
