Client Overview:
Our client approached us with the need for a Smart Universal Remote that could seamlessly control all major appliances in the home, including TVs, LEDs, Curtains, and Main gates etc. The device needed to connect with a mobile app for remote control and incorporate Alexa voice control for hands-free operations. The goal was to create a single, efficient, and user-friendly remote that could eliminate the need for multiple remotes in a home.
Product Summary:
The Smart Universal Remote is an innovative device that can control a wide range of household appliances. Designed with the end-user in mind, it offers the convenience of controlling everything from entertainment systems to home automation appliances like curtains and gates. Additionally, it integrates with Amazon Alexa for voice command functionality and can be controlled through a dedicated mobile app, providing a seamless user experience.
Our Design and Development Process:
Client Consultation and Requirement Gathering: We started the process by closely collaborating with our client to understand their vision and the essential features required for the product. The focus was on:
- Compatibility with multiple home appliances.
- Integration with a mobile app.
- Incorporation of voice control through Alexa.
3D Modeling and CAD Design: After finalizing the product’s functionality, we moved to the 3D modeling phase. Using advanced CAD tools, we created detailed 3D models of the smart remote to ensure that all components, including buttons, sensors, and connectivity ports, were positioned optimally. The design was reviewed and refined multiple times to ensure ergonomics, durability, and user-friendly aesthetics.
Key Features in 3D Modeling:
- Ergonomic design for comfortable hand grip.
- Proper placement of control buttons for ease of use.
- Integration of an IR blaster and WiFi components within the design.
PCB Design and Hardware Development: The next phase was the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) design, which was crucial in ensuring the functionality of the remote’s features. Our PCB design team worked diligently to develop a compact yet powerful board that housed:
- WiFi connectivity modules for mobile app integration.
- IR and RF transmitters for appliance control.
- Alexa voice control integration using a small yet efficient chip.
- Rechargeable battery system for long-lasting usage.
Software Development: In parallel, our software engineers worked on developing the mobile app that would allow users to control their appliances from anywhere. Key features of the app included:
- Easy device pairing with appliances.
- Customizable control options (e.g., buttons for TV, volume control, gate open/close).
- Alexa voice control integration for hands-free operations.
- Real-time feedback and notifications on the app.
Final Prototyping: With all hardware and software in place, we moved to the prototyping phase. We built a functional prototype using a 3D-printed enclosure and the custom-designed PCB. After rigorous testing, we fine-tuned the design to ensure seamless performance.
